W<\/span>hether Product Management is an art or a science is an unresolved debate I\u2019ve had with several people over the last few years. Everyone has a different perspective based on their experiences.<\/p>\n

It only seemed right to answer this question using a combination of art (qualitative) and scientific (quantitative) analysis. I\u2019m sure someone will point out that qualitative analysis also has a scientific method to it but that would ruin my analogy so\u2026 shhh.<\/p>\n

I conducted an anonymous survey of 49 people, all in some way connected to the world of product management. Along with the topic of this blog, it also included what attributes they feel are most important for a product manager, which you can read about in my previous blog post.<\/p>\n

What are the top attributes of a Product Manager, according to people in the product community?<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

For each, the \u2018art\u2019 option is on the left and the \u2018science\u2019 option is on the right. It includes the application of sympathy, empathy, and compassion to understand and react to situations and individuals as needed, as well as an underlying concern for and consideration of others. If you\u2019ve had a manager with a low EQ, you\u2019ll know only too well how important this is!<\/p>\n<p id=\"5a98\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--p\"><strong class=\"markup--strong markup--p-strong\"><em class=\"markup--em markup--p-em\">IQ<\/em><\/strong> is Intelligence Quotient, a numbered scale of how smart someone is. It focusses on logical thinking, problem-solving and critical thinking skills. Photo by Jens Johnsson on Unsplash<\/figcaption><\/figure><figcaption><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h4 id=\"77fe\" class=\"graf graf--h4 graf-after--figure\">Soft Skills vs Hard\u00a0Skills<\/h4>\n<p id=\"937d\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--h4\"><strong class=\"markup--strong markup--p-strong\"><em class=\"markup--em markup--p-em\">Soft skills<\/em><\/strong> relates to skills that are less tangible than hard skills. It does not mean they can\u2019t be taught but it includes communicating, presenting, building rapport and being persuasive.<\/p>\n<p id=\"d252\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--p\"><strong class=\"markup--strong markup--p-strong\"><em class=\"markup--em markup--p-em\">Hard skills<\/em><\/strong> are more tangible and generally easier to prove\u200a\u2014\u200abeing able to create and amend user stories in JIRA, create wireframes on Sketch, or write Javascript are all examples of hard skills.<\/p>\n<h4 id=\"9da8\" class=\"graf graf--h4 graf-after--p\">Business vs Technical<\/h4>\n<p id=\"1566\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--h4\"><strong class=\"markup--strong markup--p-strong\"><em class=\"markup--em markup--p-em\">Business<\/em><\/strong> in this context relates to knowledge of areas within the company that are outside of product development. This includes knowledge of marketing, sales, and the commercial drivers of the business, having a relationship with these teams, and being able to translate their requirements into the product process.<\/p>\n<p id=\"79ec\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--p\"><strong class=\"markup--strong markup--p-strong\"><em class=\"markup--em markup--p-em\">Technical<\/em><\/strong> means knowledge of technology in general, the company, and more specifically the product\u2019s tech stack and using this knowledge to determine technical solutions to business problems.<\/p>\n<h4 id=\"020b\" class=\"graf graf--h4 graf-after--p\">Customer vs Commercial<\/h4>\n<p id=\"e48c\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--h4\"><strong class=\"markup--strong markup--p-strong\"><em class=\"markup--em markup--p-em\">Customer<\/em><\/strong>-led product managers understand the product\u2019s customers and the wider consumer industry inside out. Photo by Sharon McCutcheon on Unsplash<\/figcaption><\/figure><figcaption><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h4 id=\"bb5b\" class=\"graf graf--h4 graf-after--figure\">The responses<\/h4>\n<p id=\"d3f2\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--h4\">I\u2019ve got my survey participants and I\u2019ve presented them with the questions. What were the results?<\/p>\n<p id=\"d714\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--p\">For all four questions, the average answer leaned somewhat to the left, with customer focus the most-so. Customer vs Commercial did also have the highest standard deviation of the four, showing less consensus and highlighting the varying role of product across teams and companies.<\/p>\n<p id=\"d256\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--p\">The consensus was strongest that business knowledge is more important than technical knowledge, although once again this varies by company, team and even the role.<\/p>\n<p id=\"36cf\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--p\">If you focus on the customer needs, then you will inherently be providing business opportunities and the commercials will follow.<\/p>\n<figure><figcaption><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p id=\"3e49\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--figure\">There is a clear trend in the responses that being a product manager is more an art than it is a science. Taking this as the final answer would be convenient, given how hard it is to explain the role of a product manager to people outside the profession.<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"7e01\" class=\"graf graf--h3 graf-after--p\">One final\u00a0question<\/h3>\n<p id=\"b531\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--h3\">If I asked the question of where a product manager sits on the same scale with for \u2018art vs science\u2019 to the same group of people, they would confirm what the rest of the data tells us, right?<\/p>\n<p id=\"39ae\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--p\"><strong class=\"markup--strong markup--p-strong\">Wrong!<\/strong> While it did receive the widest standard deviation (the full 7 options on the scale were all selected at least once), the scales tipped in favour of \u2018Science\u2019.<\/p>\n<p id=\"1952\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--p\">Despite a relatively modest lean towards science in the average score, 41% of respondents selected an option that is on the science side of the scale, and only 8% selected an option on the art side. The remaining 51% went right in the middle.<\/p>\n<figure>\n<p><figure id=\"attachment_310\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-310\" style=\"width: 830px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-310\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/chrismiles.co\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/1A83nBvr91ihF1pa0nrhzog.png?resize=525%2C266&ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"525\" height=\"266\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/chrismiles.co\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/1A83nBvr91ihF1pa0nrhzog.png?w=830&ssl=1 830w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/chrismiles.co\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/1A83nBvr91ihF1pa0nrhzog.png?resize=300%2C152&ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/chrismiles.co\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/1A83nBvr91ihF1pa0nrhzog.png?resize=768%2C389&ssl=1 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 525px) 100vw, 525px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-310\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">51% of respondents felt that product management is equally art and science.<\/figcaption><\/figure><figcaption><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p id=\"5a96\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--figure\">In my opinion, there are two factors to explain this:<\/p>\n<ol class=\"postList\">\n<li id=\"094c\" class=\"graf graf--li graf-after--p\">There is a wider societal stigma about \u2018the arts\u2019 vs \u2018the sciences\u2019. It is perceived as better, not to mention simpler to explain if your work is more tangible and grounded in a particular skill or set of skills.<\/li>\n<li id=\"e206\" class=\"graf graf--li graf-after--li\">The product management role provides structure to previously intangible skills and competencies and has led to these skills being perceived as more scientific than they once were<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h4 id=\"6d25\" class=\"graf graf--h4 graf-after--li\">Results by role\u00a0type<\/h4>\n<p id=\"01dd\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--h4\">There were some differences between those currently in product roles and those that work with them closely, less closely or are considering moving into the field.<\/p>\n<p id=\"0f5d\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--p\">Product managers push the dial a little to the right, indicating that those in product roles are a little more convinced that product is a science.<\/p>\n<p id=\"665f\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--p\">Despite the small sample of size of 6 people, those that work closely with product managers believe as a whole that product management is ever so slightly more of an art than in it a science.<\/p>\n<figure>\n<p><figure id=\"attachment_309\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-309\" style=\"width: 657px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-309\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/chrismiles.co\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/1e_ZX2JS9c5sgtr3V6apjyQ.png?resize=525%2C205&ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"525\" height=\"205\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/chrismiles.co\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/1e_ZX2JS9c5sgtr3V6apjyQ.png?w=657&ssl=1 657w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/chrismiles.co\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/1e_ZX2JS9c5sgtr3V6apjyQ.png?resize=300%2C117&ssl=1 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 525px) 100vw, 525px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-309\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Product managers think their role is more scientific than their closest team members do.<\/figcaption><\/figure><figcaption><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p id=\"4481\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--figure\">How would you explain these results? Do product managers like to believe they\u2019re more scientific than they are or does this just highlight the complex and variable nature of the role?<\/p>\n<p id=\"2809\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--p\">Where would you put yourself on the scale?
